We have reproduced this on a device that haven't received the 2.1 update, and also seem to have this problem, so it may not be related to the update itself. Still looking into this right now. Those who attempted reinstall, did it fix the problem for you?
The current best solution is to wait about 5-10 seconds at the "tap to enter" screen before pressing the device's "back" key to remove the dark cover.
